How to Measure and Choose Hanging Methods for Custom Curtain Projects

Curtain dimensions and heading construction must be considered together. This guide explains what a B2B buyer should record before sampling, whether the project uses tracks, rods or selected no-drill solutions.

Key takeaway

When measurements are uncertain, send photos of the full window, mounting area and existing hardware with one known dimension. We can help organize the information before production specifications are confirmed.

1. Identify what is already installed

Before measuring fabric, confirm the installation system. Photograph the full window and the top fixing area. Note whether a ceiling track, wall track, rod or no-drill surface will be used.

  • Track: measure the usable track length
  • Rod: measure the usable rod length between end stops
  • New installation: state the planned mounting position
  • No-drill: photograph and identify the surface material

2. Measure width and drop from the correct reference

For an installed track or rod, width is normally based on that hardware rather than only the glass. Drop should be measured from the hanging point to the intended finished hem. Record several drop measurements when floors, ceilings or sills may be uneven.

  • Use a rigid tape where possible
  • Record units clearly—centimetres or inches
  • State whether the curtain ends at the sill, below the sill or near the floor
  • Do not deduct or add allowances without noting them

3. Decide the visual fullness

Finished curtain width and fabric consumption are not the same. Sheers and lace often need more gathering to appear full, while heavy blackout constructions may need a different balance. The suitable ratio depends on fabric, heading and desired effect and should be confirmed during sampling.

4. Match the hanging method to the project

Choose a method based on existing hardware, appearance, installation conditions and how often the curtain will be handled.

  • Hooks or heading tape: flexible for tracks and some rods
  • Rod pocket: simple, soft gathered appearance
  • Grommets: defined waves on a suitable rod
  • Pleated headings: more tailored appearance with project-specific hardware
  • Selected hook-and-loop or tension-rod solutions: only after surface and size review

5. Avoid the most common specification errors

Common problems include sending only glass dimensions, confusing finished width with flat fabric width, omitting the hanging point, mixing panels and pairs, or choosing a heading that does not match the installed hardware.

  • Label every measurement
  • Include wide and close-up installation photos
  • Confirm panel quantity per window
  • Approve the final specification before sample or production

Measurement information for multi-room projects

Use a room-by-room schedule with a unique window code, location, hardware type, width, drop, curtain type and quantity. This makes sampling, packing identification and installation coordination easier for hospitality and project orders.
